Conversion Of The Times
By Danny Davis
For some people the words “analog to digital conversion” are frightening and confusing. Especially when it comes to losing your favorite programs.
With many consumers scratching their heads about the soon to be conversion from analog T.V. to digital T.V., others realize it’s a step into an ever changing world of new technology. This conversion will allow your local cable company to provide you with more options such as more High Definition channels, and On Demand Television.
I can remember when cable television first came out. It guaranteed there would be no commercials and only programs. As good as it sounded some refused to update from rabbit ears to cable because they thought the Government could watch them through their television sets. Yeah, we’ve come a long way.
On February 17, 2009, we will enter a new world of technology, as the days of rabbit ears and aluminum foil become the laughing joke of television history. If you’re one of the 18 million households who still use rabbit ears, you will no longer be able to watch television. Yes, that includes PBS as well.
A study done by Centris found 28 million analog televisions will need this conversion. Surprisingly, only 48% of households are aware of the change. That’s why MTC Technologies wanted to make sure the word gets out about the new conversion in hopes of answering questions and easing minds. From the desk of Angie Rupe, Office Manager, here is that press release.
First, if you purchase cablevision from MTC Technologies, you do NOT need to do anything. MTC will do all of the conversions from analog to digital for you. You will NOT need to purchase any of the advertised analog converter boxes. However, you are receiving free, over-the-air broadcasting via an antenna on analog television sets, you will have three options for continued viewing after February 17, 2009: Purchase a converter box that will convert the digital signal into analog for an existing set, purchase a new television set with a built-in digital tuner and/or subscribe to MTC Technologies Cablevision (if available in your area).
All TVs purchased after 5/25/07 are digital unless it is indicated differently on the back of the TV. If you are still not sure if your TV is digital, refer to the owner’s manual or check with the manufacturer’s website.
If you do not own a digital TV, analog converter boxes for over-the-air reception are available at most discount & electronics stores, plus the government is providing up to 2 coupons for each home in the amount of $40 each to help off-set the consumer’s cost.
All traditional broadcast stations, which include WHBF (4), KWQC (6), WQAD (8), KIIN (12), WQPT (14), KLJB (18), KWKB (20), WQPT (24) and KGCW (26) have been mandated by Congress to convert their television signal from analog to digital by February 17, 2009. This is being done to free up frequencies for public safety communications such as police, fire, and emergency rescue as well as advanced wireless communication services.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work through this transition. We will be here for you every step of the way.
