The small town of Mediapolis, Iowa has been put on the national map by four third grade students who could quite possibly revolutionize sports and a new way of life for the blind.
Caleb Siegle, Justin Massner, Garrett McGhee and Kaitlyn Orr are national winners in the Toshiba ExploraVision contest. The students most recently won the regionals before getting the call informing them that they had won the nationals. “I knew it was a special project when we were picked for the regionals but to win an award on the national level is just so exciting for these kids. They’ve worked really hard on this and deserve it,” stated MHS student mentor Julie Burgus. Click Here For More Information

At the May 5 Mediapolis City Council meeting, the members continued discussion (begun at the last meeting) about installing sirens and/or other devices as safety measures to let people know if severe weather is imminent.  The siren which blows at noon here is not used for emergency purposes, although Des Moines County fire departments are notified by DMC dispatch and the siren can be started manually. Assistant City Clerk Carolyn Stoller, who attended a workshop on this subject last month, explained that sirens are designed only to be heard out of doors. Those that came out Friday and Saturday night were treated to fine acting, especially by the seasoned talents of Seniors Robyn Smuck (“Night Mother”); Casie Brockert, Asia Jamison, Andrew Langholdt and Alissa Mathiasmeier (“In The Dark”); and Brittney Vahle (“Whodunit”).  The Seniors played leading parts and led the entire cast through the three performances that kept the audience in rapt attention, fits of laughter and amused bewilderment as the productions flowed from a story of teen angst and suicide, to mistaken identities and cover-up, to mystery and detective work.
